A diamond merchant's son was kidnapped from near his house in Varacha area of the city and the abductors have demanded Rs 60 lakh as ransom for his release, police said on Sunday.
       
Diamond merchant Arvind Sutariya's son Divyesh (14) was abducted on Thursday from near his house in Trikamnagar society of Varacha area while he was on his way to attend his tuition classes, they said.
       
Deputy Commissioner of Police Subhash Trivedi today confirmed that Divyesh's parents have been contacted by the abductors for ransom. "Soon after the boy (Divyesh) went missing Arvindbhai was contacted by the abductors using SMSs. They have demanded Rs 10 lakh in cash and Rs 50 lakh worth of diamonds," Trivedi
said, adding that the abductors' location is being traced using the number from which SMS was received.

Police sources said that the reason for abduction could also be professional rivalry with the boy's father. Efforts are on to trace the SMSs made by abductors, police said.
