State health minister Jaynarayan Vyas was in Surat on Sunday to inaugurate a free food service started for poor patients at New Civil Hospital. Speaking on the occasion, Vyas said the state government was serious about improving healthcare in the state.

"In the first two programmes, 108 service will be improved, while all government hospitals will be brought at par with private hospitals by 2012. To meet the requirements of modernisation, we have decided to increase the seat capacity in medical and nursing colleges in the state. As many as 700 seats will be added in five medical colleges of the state and we have increased 100 seats in PG from this very academic session. In future, the number of seats will be raised to 1,600 so that even a poor student can pursue medical education," Vyas added.

"To meet the nursing requirement, 800 new seats have been approved by the state government this year. In the fourth programme, the state government aims to strengthen research work for deadly diseases like cancer, Aids, and cardiology and kidney ailments," Vyas said.
