Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) is gearing up for delimitation of wards in the city and for fixing the number of corporators from each ward. The job has been entrusted to the Town Development Department of SMC, which will fix the number of wards and corporators in accordance with the population.

SMC will begin the delimitation process of its wards once the LS election is over and the code of conduct is lifted. Officials of Town Development Department (TDD) of SMC will soon start survey work to fix the number of wards in the city and number of corporators to be selected from each ward. At present, SMC has 38 wards, out of which four wards were added after new areas were merged into SMC limits in 2006.

The 34 ward limits were fixed on the basis of 2001 census. One ward was created for a population of 70,000 and three corporators were fixed for each ward. In the four new wards, the population criteria was kept at 1 lakh for one ward.

Authorities plan to hold the next SMC election, due in 2010, according to new
delimitation. Civic authorities are in the process to make a uniform limit of population and number of corporators for all wards during the delimitation process. SMC sources said that the number of wards and corporators could get increased or decreased in delimitation.

CY Bhatt, assistant commissioner of SMC, said that TDD has been asked to start work as early as possible if it wants to complete it before civic elections in 2010. The survey is needed because new areas have been added to the corporation limits.

“We have asked TDD to evaluate the possibility of one ward one corporator  format as is the case in BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation. Once the work is done by TDD, the recommendations will be forwarded to district collector’s office as it will do all the remaining work of preparing new voter lists, inviting objections and adding new areas in wards,” Bhatt added.
