A special MCOCA court here has acquitted Karimulla Khan, key aide of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim, in a 1987 murder case after observing that the prosecution has failed to prove its case.

Karimulla who was arrested in August last year from suburban Nallasopara will however remain behind bars as he is still facing trial in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case.

Special MCOCA Judge YD Shinde on Wednesday acquitted Karimulla observing that although the police had recovered the weapon from him it fails to prove his guilt in the murder.

According to the prosecution, Karimulla had stabbed to death another member from Dawood Ibrahim's gang after it was suspected that the victim had turned into a police informer and was leaking information about the gang to the police.

Karimulla was absconding since 15 years and was arrested last year.

He is alleged to have gone to Pakistan via Dubai and undergone weapon training prior to the 1993 blasts. He had also allegedly participated in the transportation of RDX from Raigad to Mumbai.

Karimulla is believed to have been a close aide of Dawood and had allegedly stayed at Dawood's residence in Karachi.
