The Space Applications Centre (SAC) of the Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) celebrated National Technology Day on Monday, with the Vikram Sarabhai Space Exhibition being kept open from 10 am to 5 pm.

Several films on Isro’s space programme were screened during the exhibition, the major attraction of which remained the Chandrayaan-I model. Visitors, ranging from children to the elderly, thronged the exhibition, which ended with a special face-to-face programme with Isro scientists RP Dubey, DB Bhatt, DB Dave, RM Pandya, CM Nagrani, PS Thakker and AM Suchdey, among others.

Senior scientist PS Thakker said that the Vikram Sarabhai Space Exhibition was designed to increase awareness on the space programmes of Isro and the department of space, among the general public, and especially among students.

May 11 has been celebrated as National Technology Day every year since it witnessed three technological milestones — the Pokhran II nuclear test, the test firing of the Trishul missile and the maiden flight of HANSA-3 jet prototype — on this day in 1998.

Various models and projects, most of them operational, were displayed at the exhibition. Among the major attractions for the visitors were pictures recently taken by Chandrayaan-I.

In the face-to-face programme with the scientists, children as well as adults posed questions related to the Chandrayaan-I mission and its development. One of the scientists said that data and photographs were arriving gradually and they were working on this information at present.

When one visitor asked about the viability of the money the government was spending on space programmes and research, scientist RP Dubey said that India was still spending at least 20 times less than the US in this regard.
