The Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation (GSRTC), in a bid to provide its drivers with better training, intends to partner a firm for the use of driver simulation programmes.

It will provide the private firm with infrastructure and will look forward to sharing profits with it. Drivers of private operators will also receive training under the programme.

GSRTC has floated a tender inviting a private firm to join in a partnership for the project. However, GSRTC officials said that the idea to train its drivers and those of private operators arose when a firm approached it with the plan.

“Our plan is to partner a company that provides machines and expertise. GSRTC will provide the infrastructure. The plan is to introduce facilities across a majority of offices in the state,” a senior GSRTC official said.

The body will also benefit from the venture in terms of profit. “The proposal involves GSRTC drivers being trained by the partner firm for free. The firm can earn profits by training and testing drivers of private operators, and we will share these profits,” the official said.

The official claimed that the partnering firm will help GSRTC avail of the right kind of training and testing for its drivers. “There are shortcuts for training and getting test clearance certificates from private firms. Now, it will be stricter for our drivers as they will have to clear tests taken by experts,” the official said.

GSRTC expects to finalise the partner firm within a month. However, training and testing of drivers using simulation machines may take a few months.
