Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has reduced the suspension period of 28 VS doctors who were involved in molestation of nursing students during Dhuleti revelry.
In a meeting of the AMC Medical Education Trust, presided over by Mayor Kanaji Thakore, the panel reviewed the suspension order of 28 resident doctors of the hospital and decided to give relief to the doctors after considering the appeals of the resident doctors and the nursing students, a statement released by the AMC on Saturday said.

The committee shortened the suspension period of all 28 doctors, who were found guilty in nursing students' molestation case by the inquiry committee, to 42 days. The panel imposed Rs10,000 as penalty on three doctors who were prime accused in the case.

Municipal commissioner IP Gautam had suspended Jayant Tekani of medical unit, Prakash Patel of surgical and Rajesh Punihar of paediatric unit for one year, while 25 others were suspended for three months.

The committee also decided that the resident doctors would not be paid their stipend for the period of suspension.

The resident doctors have apologised and given written assurance to the authority that such an incident would not take place in future, said the statement. The resident doctors were suspended on March 23 and their 42-day suspension will end on May 5.

The nursing students, who had levelled charges of molestation against the resident doctors, had made representation to the mayor and requested him to show leniency to the doctors.
