If democracy is the government of the people, for the people and by the people, how can it succeed without people going an extra mile.

Madhukant Chinubhai Shah, 65, seems to think so. He cast his vote on Thursday, barely four days after suffering a heart attack on April 26 and undergoing angiography and angioplasty!

Shah sought early discharge from hospital to cast his vote. After exercising his franchise at the Devashish School booth, he sat on a chair offered by a policeman who was on duty. Talking to DNA, he said “I always manage to vote because I believe that my vote shouldn’t be wasted.”

According to his family members, Shah was admitted to Sterling hospital on April 26 after a severe heart attack. Doctors advised him to undergo angioplasty and angiography.

The family also said that he was supposed to take some rest in the hospital but Shah insisted on being discharged to be able to vote.

Interventional cardiologist at Sterling hospital, Dr Sunil Thanvi, said “He is a man of guts. At his age, when many people have little zest for life, he is setting himself as a role model for others.”

Shah had undergone a bypass surgery some five years back, and this time when he was brought to the hospital his condition was more critical. “However, when he asked for being discharged, we allowed him to go as he has immense will power to overcome any trouble,” added Thanvi.

Shah was very cool and calm at the time of voting, and believes that each and every vote is invaluable for the nation which can bring change in society.
