Congress on Saturday said Rahul Gandhi's statement that he will refuse to accept prime ministership as he lacked the experience showed his "humility" and should close the discussion on the party's candidate for the top post.

"It has been clarified once and for all by the Congress president and Rahul Gandhi that Manmohan Singh is the party's prime ministerial candidate and no no further discussion was required on it," Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi told reporters here while replying to a question.

Rahul's statement showed his humility, he said, adding "this humility is also evident in the statements of prime minister Manmohan Singh and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and is part of the Congress culture."

In a jibe at BJP leaders, Singhvi said "unlike LK Advani and Narendra Modi who pat their own backs, the Congress leaders are known by their deeds."

On Manmohan Singh himself making a statement in favour of Rahul, Singhvi said that "the country too has come to know that he (Rahul) has all the qualities required for a prime minister.

"He has already become a symbol for the youths of the country," he said.

By refusing the prime ministership twice, Sonia Gandhi had "set very high ideals and today she was at a place where it would not  be right to drag her into narrow politics", Singhvi said.
