Modern School at Vasant Vihar in posh south Delhi is in the eye of a storm with parents and students alleging “negligence” resulting in the death of 18-year-old Aakriti Bhatia.

Aakriti, a Std XII student, died on Monday after she suffered an asthma attack in class.
Angry parents and students, who gathered at the school premises for a press meet on Thursday, gheraoed principal Goldie Malhotra and shouted slogans demanding her resignation. “Aakriti died because of Malhotra’s negligence. She should be sacked,” Aakriti’s father Bipin said.

State education minister Arvinder Singh Lovely has ordered a probe into the matter.
According to Aakriti’s parents and classmates, Aakriti complained of breathlessness in class on Monday morning, but the teacher and school authorities did not take her seriously. By the time they took her to hospital, Aakriti was declared dead on arrival.

“The school will have to face the consequences. Goldie was watching TV at the time of the incident. My child was not even given water when she cried for it. They have killed her,” Aakriti’s maternal grandmother Varsha Munjal said.

A trustee of the school Ashok Pratap Singh said, “The school cannot be blamed.”
A teacher said, “The school nurse gave Aakriti oxygen as part of first aid. We also called her parents, who told us to wait till they arrived. When Aakriti’s condition worsened, her oxygen mask was removed and she was taken to a nearby hospital. Aakriti was sobbing in the car and kept saying she did not want to die. She collapsed on the way to the hospital.”

But Aakriti’s classmates still blame the school. “She (Malhotra) killed my friend. Does she have any answer as to why the oxygen mask was removed when Aakriti was battling for life, or why an ambulance could not be arranged for Aakriti?” a classmate said.

The school apparently, only had a nurse who was not skilled enough to handle the situation.

“I do not blame the nurse. This was a case for a doctor and the school does not have one,” Aakriti’s aunt, Payal Verma said.
