Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi has promised what would seem a tall order for partymen in UP - a Congress government in the state in three years. The pledge, in fact, sounded as incredible as his story about getting chocolates in a remote Amethi village destroyed by fire!

Speaking at an election rally in the Gandhi family’s pocket borough of Amethi, Rahul said: “My father used to work for you with both the hands, the Centre and the state governments were both of the Congress Party. But I can work only with one hand (the Centre) as my other hand (state government) is tied... but in the next three years, I will try to open the other hand, too.” Targeting the Mayawati regime, he said: “The state government is deliberataly stalling the progress of Amethi and Rae Bareli.”

Apparently fond of relating anecdotes to drive his point home, Rahul did not disappoint Amethi’ites as he came up with one to suit the occasion here, too. “Once, as a child, I had gone with ‘Papa’ (Rajiv Gandhi) to see a village where houses had been burnt down by a fire. Everything had been destroyed. There, an old woman, whose house and all her belongings and utensils had been charred in the blaze, gave me a chocolate. That day, Amethi won over my heart,” Rahul said.

Rahul, who was in his constituency for the first time since the poll campaign started, said, “I am sorry that I am spending only one day in Amethi. But my sister (Priyanka) is working here,” he said.

“Amethi is my family...my relation with you is that of a family, it’s not political...,” he said. “I have been going around asking for votes for Manmohan Singh and the Congress Party. But I can’t ask for votes from my family, I can only ask for your love and blessings,” he said.

Rahul also spoke about development work. “Roads have been built, there is electricity, new colleges and institutes have been opened, Canadian experts have come here to impart training...” He even quipped: “More new roads have been built in Amethi than in Rae Bareli.”
