Militants fired at a goods train in in violence-rocked North Cachar Hills district
in central Assam on Saturday.

However, no one was injured in the shooting, official sources said. Unidentified insurgents fired on the goods train in between Wadringdisa and Dautahaja at around 10.45am when it was proceeding from Lower Haflong to Lumding.

The train was stopped and the Railway Protection Force (RPF) guards retaliated. They also chased the extremists, who fled into the nearby thick jungles, the sources said.    The train engine was hit by bullets but was not damaged, the sources said.

The identity of the ultras was not immediately ascertained, but the Dima Halam Daogah (Jewel) or `Black Widows' are active in the area and had resorted to pre-poll violence targetting trains, railway stations and security forces. Two police officers and a CRPF jawan were killed and 15 persons injured in attacks on two trains last week.

The DHD-J had, however, claimed it will abstain from violence during elections as "it would not interfere with the democratic process".
