The Ahmedabad police, readying themselves to tackle any adverse situation during the Lok Sabha elections in the state, have launched drives to identify, nab and control history-sheeters, who are being made to sign bonds to ensure that they do not indulge in criminal activities at this time.

"Around 500 history-sheeters have signed bail bonds in court as a precautionary measure, so that they do not cause any trouble during the Lok Sabha elections. Around 150 more are expected to sign such bonds soon," additional commissioner of police, special branch, GS Malik said.

The city police have so far arrested more than 1,000 people as a safeguard against history-sheeters, who have been booked under various sections of the law. In additional to the local police, its special branch, prevention of crime branch and the crime branch are conducting various drives. "We have started arresting history-sheeters and have booked them under various Acts, including the Prevention of Anti Social Activities Act (Pasa)," a source in the prevention of crime branch said.

"Though this is a regular assignment for us, we have doubled our efforts because of the forthcoming elections."

The special branch of the police has launched drives, under which it is searching hotels, restaurants, railway stations and other public places, said Malik. The special branch has so far checked around 10,000 vehicles, 350 hotels and 23 railway stations. "We will not leave even gardens and bus stands, where any suspicious person can be seen moving," he said.

The Ahmedabad city crime branch has also initiated strong action against various gangs and people who may prove troublesome during the elections. "The crime branch is holding continuous vigilance and has started searching for people who may use firearms and cause trouble during the polls," a senior official of the crime branch said.

In the last month, the crime branch registered 18 cases against such individuals, and seized 23 firearms and 48 cartridges.
