If you think this robber stole to make merry with the spoils, you are in for a surprise. Meet Navghan Bharwad, alleged laptop thief and a real-life Gujarati Robin Hood, who used money gained from such thefts to help poor families marry off their daughters in community marriages. Bharwad is alleged to have stolen laptops, digital cameras and such costly equipments.

Sources in Ahmedabad crime branch said that Bharwad accumulated lakhs of rupees from various criminal activities which he later used for community marriages. “He had spent Rs4 lakh at one such wedding held at Sheth MJ High School in Viramgaam in August 2008,” a source in the crime branch said.

Bharwad was arrested by Ahmedabad rural crime branch on April 3 and was handed over to the crime branch on transit remand. He was accused of stealing more than 20 laptops and six digital cameras.

Usha Rada, assistant commissioner of police, crime branch, and police inspector MD Chaudhary interrogated Bharwad who revealed that he operated mainly around the posh localities of the city, namely Satellite, Vastrapur, Navrangpura and others.  Crime branch sources said Bharwad generally attacked cars parked at parking spaces at Shalby hospital, Karnavati club, Gallops motor showroom, Wide Angle, Big Bazaar, Iskon Mega Mall, Vishal Mega Mart and Grand Bhagwati, and stole laptops and other equipment by breaking the windows.

Sources also said that Bharwad was also involved in stealing Rs 3lakh in cash and a licenced revolver with cartridges from an advocate’s car near Gordhan Thal restaurant.  Acting ‘responsibly’, he tried returning the revolver, but the advocate did not pick up the phone. He later kept the revolver and cartridges at an electric box near IBP petrol pump on SG highway. When no one noticed, he threw it in a dustbin in Memnagar, and it was later recovered by the Vastrapur police. Bharwad was in the business of satellite TV cable connections. After incurring huge losses in the business, he started stealing.
