Reacting sharply to Gujarat Congress's claims of Rs60,000 crore grant by Congress-led UPA government to Gujarat against Rs20,000 crore grant during the Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led NDA government, Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi has ordered the state administration to submit to him a report of the grants given by the Central government from the year 2000 onwards.

Highly-placed sources in the state government said, "Modi is keen to gather facts to counter the Congress's claim of Rs60,000 crore Central grant to Gujarat and support his earlier claims of injustice to Gujarat by the Congress-led UPA government. On Monday, a high-level meeting of officials of government departments, including finance department, was called up in first half of the day to prepare a report immediately on financial injustice to Gujarat/"

The sources said, "Modi wants to open his attack this time with all facts and figures at his disposal. The chief secretary also held a meeting with senior officials of the finance department in this regard."

Well-informed sources in the state finance department told DNA that, "We have been asked to provide comparative statistics of the department-wise grants given by the Central government to the Gujarat and grants given to other states with the similar objectives since 2000 (during NDA and UPA rule). Due to increased budgetary size over the years increase in the grants is natural. However, the percentage increase over other states is important. We will give report on the percent-wise grant given to Gujarat and other states.''

Sources further said, "CM is likely to raise the issue of injustice to Gujarat by the UPA government in the coming Lok Sabha election campaign like he had raised before the assembly election in 2007.''
