The two-day-long novel ‘voting’ exercise launched by the BJP here and other parts of the state on “instructions from the party high command” was an attempt to gauge public support to the party.

The party had set up its booths at a large number of places, both in urban and rural areas, asking the public to express their opinion on the specially-printed ballot papers whether they supported the party’s demand, a brainchild of BJP’s prime ministerial candidate L K Advani, for repatriation of Indian black money stashed in Swiss banks to be used for economic development of the country.

At the inaugural function of one of the booths in front of the Govt Girls’ High School here on Saturday, a top BJP leader conceded that the people of this constituency knew little about black money but said the idea behind “aa natak” (this drama) was to assess public opinion.

“We are going to ask at least one lakh people to cast their votes at their designated voting booths, both stationary and mobile, so that we can gauge whether public opinion is in our favour or not. Based on this feedback, we will rectify our poll strategy as polling day is still 18 days away,” he said.

Another BJP leader said that when election code of conduct was very strict and even for public display of posters of the candidate and top leaders they had to seek permission from district election officers, such an exercise stood them in good stead.

“This is an indirect way of being constantly in public view. The party leaders and workers, instead of remaining at the party’s offices at the district and taluka level, had to go in the field to be in contact with people,” he said.

The leader said that this time the party has changed its strategy. “Every party office-bearer or civic and panchayat body member has been assigned a booth where they have to bring some voters on the polling day.”  he said.
