Corporate corps are ruing the fact that B-schools did not teach them to negotiate meltdowns and neutralise layoffs with start-ups — the Mudra Institute of Communication’s Entrepreneurship Development Centre will help future entrepreneurs hone those very skills.

The MICA-EDC will form a students’ recession-proof committee that will act as an advisory team for student start-ups, and help bring necessary changes in the centre’s curriculum. The changes will be calibrated to equip students to meet the challenges presented by the current economic situation. A senior professor and the executive vice-chairman of MICA-EDC, Gautam Raj Jain, said, “The new committee will help tackle the situation with innovative ideas.”

The curriculum will emphasise aspects such as turnaround management, and ease students into start-up firms, Jain said. He said that the institute trains its students to help set up their own enterprise, which takes away the pressure of looking for a job, irrespective of the economic situation. “The changes in the curriculum will make the students’ expertise even more resistant to the slowdown, Jain said. A MICA-EDC student, Sandeep Malhotra, said, “The committee will form a think tank which will suggest changes in areas such as curriculum and the mode of student intake.”

The number of enterprises set up by the students of MICA-EDC has increased significantly this year. Some four new ventures were set up by the students of the last batch; around 15 to 20 ventures are likely to come up this year.
