Prohibitory orders were on Saturday promulgated at Bejdanga, adjoining Lalgarh in West Midnapore district as hundreds of armed tribals blocked the roads demanding release of three arrested persons.

Tribals, belonging to Police Santras Birodhi Janaganer Committee, spearheading a stir against 'police atrocities' since November two in Lalgarh in adjoining West Midnapore, armed with spears and lathis, blocked the roads at Bejdanga. They demanded that three arrested tribals be released.

"Prohibitory orders under section 144 CRPC have been imposed at Bejdanga apprehending breach of peace," Bankura superintendent of Police Vishal Garg said.

Meanwhile, a Midnapore report quoting intelligence sources said that Maoists were forming a woman guerrilla squad at Katapahari, the entry point to Lalgarh, to prevent the police from entering.

Lalgarh has been out of bounds to the police since November 2 after the landmine blast at Salboni. The Committee has imposed a 'police boycott' in protest against raids on their homes after the blast.

The sources claimed that a 100-strong male squad of Maoists have also been posted in the area at the behest of the Committee.

"This squad belonging to the Shabar community have been trained in arms by people from Andhra Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand," they claimed.

The West Midnapore district administration, sources said, had proposed to the state government that polling on 44 booths in Lalgarh and 13 in its surrounding areas would not be possible without police deployment.

The entire area is surrounded by deep jungles and is Maoist-prone.

According to the sources, the district authority had suggested to the state government to impress upon the Election Commission that polling in 57 booths in and around Lalgarh be held at a later stage 'pending discussions with the tribals'
body'.

There are 4,148 booths in Midnapore, Ghatal and Panskura Lok Sabha constituencies in West Midnapore district.
