The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has chalked out a different plan to recover property tax. Now, one would need to pay only one sixth of the total property tax dues to get the sealed properties released. The rest of the pending amount could be paid in five equated monthly instalments, said Asit Vora, the chairman of AMC's standing committee.
The new scheme has been implemented with immediate effect. Reasoning the move, Vora said that with the end of the financial year, the civic body has decided to become more liberal.
The revenue department of AMC had sealed 18,418 properties to recover property tax. According to the earlier provision, one had to pay 50% amount of the total property tax dues to get the property released. When contacted the chairman of revenue committee of AMC Mayur Dave, he showed ignorance on this issue. "I have not received any official information in this regard," he said.
Moreover the revenue department has introduced a rebate scheme on payment of property tax in advance and set a target to recover Rs15 crore towards property tax in the first month of new financial year. "As we are giving 10% rebate on advance payment of property tax we expect good response from the citizens," said the chairman of revenue committee of AMC Mayur Dave.
Reasoning the move, Dave said that this scheme was announced during budget to reward the regular tax payers. Many citizens did not pay property tax even after introducing various schemes, but such a scheme may help the civic body to recover more money, Dave said. He said that the advance tax would be calculated on the basis of last year's property tax bill. The rebate scheme will be available till April 30, 2009.
The revenue department had recovered Rs278 crore towards property tax in 2008-09 against the earlier year's total recovery of Rs242 crore. The recovery towards professional tax was Rs46.90 crore as against Rs4.85 crore. The total revenue from tax reached Rs370.80 crore during 2008-09, which was Rs288.47 crore in 2007-08.
