Following the arrest of Maya Kodnani, the Sindhi community in the state has cancelled all public functions to celebrate Cheti Chand, their new year day. The arrest has sent shock waves among the community.  “We will not celebrate the festival on Saturday following the arrest of our leader,” said Laxmandas Rohra, chairman of the All-India Sindhi chambers.

The community takes out processions in all major cities and towns across the state on this occasion every year. In Ahmedabad, Maya Kodnani always used to take part in these festivities. However, this time, the community would have missed its leader following the arrest. The community was planning to take out a procession with 150 trucks and thousands of community members. “It will send a wrong message if we hold celebrations despite the arrest of our only strong political leader,” Rohra added. In Vadodara, the local Sindhi community cancelled all public celebrations on the occasion.

The community will celebrate the festival in a simple manner, without any grand celebrations.  Talking to DNA, a senior Sindhi leader of Vadodara, Rupchand Vasvani, said, “We have cancelled all public celebrations organised to mark Cheti Chand festival after the news of Mayaben's arrest. We will just visit temples, have prasad and perform religious rituals.”

Sindhis had planned 10 public functions across the city to celebrate the festival. The biggest function was scheduled to be held by the Sindhu Seva Samiti on Monday. All these functions stand cancelled now. Apart from this, the community has also cancelled the programme of fireworks organised at Lehripura gate in Vadodara.  A senior member of Sindhu Seva samiti, Jitendra Sevani, said, “We have unanimously decided to cancel all cultural programmes following Mayaben's arrest.”
