There is something wrong inside Sabarmati jail. A team of four doctors from the civil hospital was called in by the jail administration on Friday for an 'emergency' in the jail and another team has been asked to remain in standby. The jail campus has been witnessing all sorts of activities after a struggle between prisoners and jail staff was reported two days back.

The jail administration had requested the civil hospital to send an orthopaedic doctor, two surgeons and an x-ray technician. "The jail authorities have also asked us to keep a team of doctors ready for any other emergency," administrative officer, civil hospital, Gautam Patel told DNA. He also said that, if needed, another team of doctors will be send to the jail.

As many as 20 jailbirds were allegedly beaten up by the jail staff to force them break their two-day long hunger strike.

A relative of a prisoner, on the condition of anonymity, told DNA that the prisoners inside had been beaten like animals and they needed immediate treatment.

"The injured prisoners are not being allowed to move to the civil hospital as that could reveal the brutality of the jail staff," she said.  Unconfirmed reports said that three senior jail officials along with a team of jail staff had assaulted the prisoners.

The prisoners were also allegedly denied electricity and water facilities and kept in cells
for the entire day.
