Girl students of Gandhi Vidyapith at Vedchhi have accused the principal and some lecturers of sexually harassing a girl student living in the college hostel. To voice their protest, the girl’s co-students in the hostel abstained from dinner on Wednesday and demanded strict action against the offenders.

The principal, Deva Ahir, has refuted the charges. The girl has not named any college lecturer.

According to information, Vaibhavi Patel, a student of BRS course at Gandhi Vidyapith in Vedcchi village of Valod taluka, accused the college principal and some lecturers of sexually harassing her. She alleged that principal Deva Ahir used to come to the hostel in night and flash torchlight on her.

Ahir often tried to touch her during classes and once even patted on her back. She further claimed that whenever she used to talk to other students, Ahir and other lecturers used to allege that she had illicit relationship with them.

The students living in the hostel were enraged after listening to Patel. They even complained to college administration. However, the college administration did not take any action against the principal. In order to express their anger, the hostel residents abstained from dinner on Wednesday. On Thursday, the students gathered in front of office and chanted slogans against the authorities. Fearing an agitation, the authorities informed the local police.

The students were pacified after the president of the Vidyapith, Amarsinh Chaudhry, intervened into the matter. He assured of concrete steps against the culprits and promised that students will not face any harassment in future.

Deva Ahir, principal of the college, refuted the charges against him and termed them as part of a conspiracy. He claimed he had not visited the girls’ hostel even once in his tenure of 27 years. Ahir expressed his willingness to face any inquiry.
