After the Congress and BJP, the SP and BSP have taken the hi-tech route to electioneering by reaching out to voters and party workers through e-mails and SMSes.

While these means of reaching out to the electorate are new to them, both parties said they will try to make the best use of them.

Kamlesh Pandey, who is looking after the election portfolio of BSP nominee from Lucknow Akhilesh Das Gupta, said "the SMS campaign of the party will be launched soon. We are studying all aspects to ensure that we do not violate the model code of conduct."

"Emails are being sent by party workers and Internet is being used to connect the workers with the party and leaders," he said.

Giving an insight into the SP's hi-tech polls strategy, Samajwadi Party spokesperson Rajendra Chaudhary said, "candidates are using hi-tech means to connect to voters in urban areas."

Chaudhary said the party's website is being updated and made more interactive.

"The helplines set up to receive calls after the murder of PWD engineer Manoj Kumar Gupta in Auraiya late last year are also being used by us to get feedback from voters on different issues," he said.

"We are using the helpline as a channel by which the people of the state can register their complaints against the ruling party to us," said Chaudhary.

The Congress has already taken the hi-tech route to electioneering.

"It was Rajiv Gandhi, who gave the gift of Information Technology to the nation and the party will be extensively use hi-tech modes during this elections. All the district offices have been linked to the state headquarter through Internet. And the UPCC is linked to the Congress headquarters in Delhi by both Internet and video conferencing," spokesperson Ram Kumar Bhargav said.

Apart from this, the party also plans to connect itself to the voters by SMSes, Bhargav added.

Hailing the power of IT, a BJP spokesperson here said that "a political rally in which the participation is over one lakh is termed as successful. Through the Internet, we are daily holding a 'rally' of 20,000 workers, which is certainly more powerful than a political rally."
