The nursing students of VS Hospital have done a volte-face a day after 28 resident doctors of the hospital were suspended for varying periods. They made a representation before Ahmedabad mayor Kanaji Thakore on Tuesday, asking that a lenient view be taken of the doctors suspended on Monday.

However, the mayor said there would be no change in the decision taken by municipal commissioner IP Gautam in this regard. On Monday, Gautam had suspended three doctors for one year and 25 others for three months for molesting nursing students during Holi celebrations. This action was taken on the basis of a report submitted by an investigation committee.

Around 20 nursing students met the mayor at the AMC office at Danapith and submitted a memorandum asking that the punishment meted out to the erring doctors be eased. They said they had unanimously forgiven the doctors and that they had given their statements before the investigation committee under pressure after reports had been published in the media, which they had also mentioned before the committee.

The nursing students said the media reports had been exaggerations and that no doctor had entered their hostel and tried to remove the apron of the students. “We have been under mental torture because of the reports published in newspapers. Our parents are very worried about us,” a nursing student told the mayor.

The mayor said Gautam had taken the decision on the basis of the report of the investigation committee formed after receiving the complaints of the nursing students.
