In a national-level teacher’s contest organised by Educational Initiatives (EI) two teachers from Gujarat made their mark among the teaching fraternity by winning the coveted competition. Educational Initiative is a group formed by IIM-A-IIT alumni, which focuses exclusively on assessment and learning outcomes measurement in school education.

EI organised the test in a bid to spread awareness about student misconceptions that could be one of the reasons for learning gaps, where 60 selected teachers from various schools across the country participated. Out of them, 8 teachers were declared winners, which include the two from Gujarat.

Maria Firoz Amreliwala who teaches math in Zenith school in Vadodara and Shanta Rao, who is a social studies teacher at St Kabir School in Vadodara managed to come out winners and become exemplar roles for their students.

Stating the competition to be an initative to encourage teachers to identify misconceptions and share their learning with a larger audience, Vaishali Shah a senior marketing communication manager at EI, said, the teachers were asked to present their analysis for the teacher’s competition on the basis of results from a large-scale research study called ‘Student Learning’. The results of research show that students have several wrong notions about the basic concepts like measurement, fractions, among a host of others.

Total 9,000 english medium schools across India participated in the survey. Amreliwala found that most of the students cram up things and don’t try hard to understand the concept thoroughly. To avoid this, says Amreliwala, we should make education system more practical oriented, and instead of giving students ready formula, they should be encouraged to find the solution for problems. Over dependency on ready material should be erased, she said.

The other winner Shanta Rao said, “Many a time students don’t find the subject interesting.  To make them take interest in the subject, an interesting method should be adopted including updating it frequently.
