A 24-year-old salesman died while his teacher-girlfriend is battling for life in the national capital on Sunday after they allegedly set themselves on fire in an apparent suicide pact.

Police suspect the couple took the extreme step after their families refused to accept their relationship.

The incident happened on Saturday in the rented accommodation of deceased Amit Kumar, the salesman of a drug distribution company in Mukherjee Nagar.

Kumar died during treatment while Mamta (22), who works as a teacher in a private college, is battling for life at Sunderlal Jain Hospital in Ashok Vihar.

The incident came to light when a friend called Amit on his mobile phone around 9 am on Saturday, a senior police official said.

Mamta answered the phone asking the caller to save them saying that they have set themselves on fire.

Some of his friends rushed to the room and poured water on them before taking them to the hospital.

The official said Kumar, who suffered serious burn injuries, died during treatment while Mamta suffered 85 per cent burns and is struggling for life.

No suicide note was recovered from the couple, the official said, adding that a case has been registered and further investigations were on.
