A police constable tried to commit suicide on Sunday by shooting himself from his service rifle at Maoist-hit Balarampur in Purulia district after being denied leaves to go home.

"The constable Bablu Mondal who suffered bullet injury in the shoulder is now safe. An enquiry has been ordered into the incident," Superintendent of Police, Purulia, Rajesh Yadav, said.
 
Modal, posted in Keruaghatbera police outpost in Maoist-hit south Purulia, was suffering from depression for staying out of touch with his family for a long time.

He tried end his life this morning after senior officers declined to let him go home in nearby Bankura, sources said.

He was rushed to a local hospital where doctors operated on him.
