Ours is a country in which politicians clamour for party tickets to contest elections, but there is one politician who is being talked about simply because he has decided that he will not contest the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

This rather rare politician is Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh who appears determined not to contest the Parliamentary polls.

Singh's decision is not new at all as he had announced before the December 2003 assembly elections in Madhya Pradesh that he would not contest polls for 10 years if the Congress lost them.

He was chief minister then and since the Congress lost in 2003 is sticking to his decision not to contest polls for 10 years till 2013.

It was because of this that he had not contested the November 2008 Assembly elections in Madhya Pradesh. During that time, no one even remotely suggested that Singh should contest assembly polls to strengthen the party.

But this time around, things are very different and there is a demand from certain sections of the Congress that Singh be asked to contest the general elections.

It is well known that the Congress is a faction ridden party and the demand is coming from factions opposed to Singh.

It is being said that since the elections are crucial, Singh must contest them and lend a helping hand to Congress.

Singh says that normally it is felt that politicians do not do what they say and are criticised for this.

The Congress leader also said that since he is merely doing what he had said in 2003, he must not be forced to contest polls.

There are two constituencies for which Singh's name is being proposed as a possible Congress nominee -- Rajgarh, from where his younger brother Laxman Singh is the BJP nominee and Indore from where Sumitra Mahajan has already won six times in a row.

Former hockey Olympian Aslam Sher Khan, who is the Congress nominee from Sagar constituency has also said that Singh must surely contest Lok Sabha polls.

Singh has repeatedly said that he will not contest the elections but his name continues to figure in several media reports as a possible Congress nominee.
