A young woman is alleged to have been murdered by her lover over her engagement to another man. The police are on the lookout for the accused, who is absconding since the incident and is reported to have been jailed in the past in an attempt to murder case.

Dipesh Thakkar, 25, allegedly drowned Bhumika Upadhayay alias Bhumi, 22, in a water tank at his house in Maninagar. The victim's body was recovered on Saturday morning after Thakkar's brother Vikas informed the Maninagar police about the incident.

The police recovered a five-page love letter from near the body, which is believed to have been written by the victim and addressed to her family members. In the letter, Upadhayay states that she and Thakkar were in love and wanted to get married. She also mentions that her engagement to Dhigant was fixed against her wishes and under family pressure. 'We have decided to end our lives for the sake of our love,' states the letter.

However, since only Upadhayay has died in the suicide bid, police have sent the letter to the forensic department for verifying its authenticity and to check if it was actually written by the victim.

According to a source in the police, Upadhayay taught in the private tuition classes run by Thakkar and were having an affair for the last five years. However, Upadhayay's family opposed to the relationship and got her engaged to one Dhigant some two weeks back.

Thakkar became furious after learning about Upadhayay's engagement and even forced her to break it. She, however, refused to comply. On Friday morning, at around 10 am, Bhumika informed her grandfather that she was going to meet Thakkar to get back her love letters and photographs. However, when she did not return till late in the evening, her parents registered a complaint at Maninagar police station.

Maninagar PI PJ Trivedi said that Vikas, Thakkar's brother, informed the police about the dead body and said that someone had committed suicide. But investigation revealed that it was a case of murder. The victim's height was 5'4 inch and there was only 2.5 ft water in the tank. "Investigation revealed that Thakkar strangulated Upadhayay and later placed her body in the tank. The injury marks on her body also support the fact," said Trivedi.
