Every second Thursday of March is celebrated as ‘World Kidney Day’ across the world. This year, with the campaign of ‘keep the blood pressure down’, the International society of Nephrology (ISN) and International Federation of International Kidney (IFIK) celebrated this day on Thursday.

The only way to save a patient with failed kidneys is kidney transplantation. This is promoted by all medical institutes across India under different cadaveric kidney donation programmes, in which patients legally termed ‘brain dead’ can donate their kidneys and livers to the patients in need.

To promote such donation programmes, Institute of Kidney Diseases & Research centre organised a rally in the city from income tax to civil hospital, in which nearly 2,000 people including doctors, prior donors, kidney failure patients, rehabilitated patients joined hands to educate society about the donation.

According to Dr HL Trivedi, director, IKDRC, Ahmedabad; around 5,000 patients are waiting for a kidney transplant in Gujarat and the figure is still rising. “In the last three years of the campaign, we have helped 240 kidney patients which is the highest number of transplants in India. However, in comparison to the increasing number of failures, we are hardly 10% closer to the actual target,” Dr Trivedi added.

Studies by Indian Renal Foundation (IRF) reveal that among all the cases of kidney failure, 40% of the cases are a result of high blood pressure and diabetes. Purvi Shah, the programme in-charge of IRF, Ahmedabad said, “We studied 250 patients including people from both genders and all age groups. It was concluded that kidney failure caused by diabetes and hyper tension is on rise compared to that by other causes such as kidney stones and tuberculosis. Though hyper tension and diabetes are known as hereditary diseases, today they also fall under the category of lifestyle disorders.”

To prevent any diseases it is important to follow a healthy lifestyle, especially in relation to hyper tension and diabetes.
