Nationalist Congress Party MLC from Thane Jitendra Avhad could be penalised by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) under its cleanliness and sanitation bylaws 2006.

Ashish Shelar, BJP corporator of Mumbai, demanded that Avhad be punished as per the civic body’s rule as he dumped a truckload of garbage at a public road near the BMC headquarters.

“According to the bylaws, any person who is spotted littering the road will be imposed a fine of up to Rs500 by clean up marshals appointed by the civic body,” said Shelar.
The BMC should impose Rs2000 as fine on Avhad, as he dumped a truckload of garbage, he said.

On February 28, three NCP workers (Thane unit) had allegedly hijacked a civic dumper truck from Vikhroli and unloaded the garbage from it outside the civic head office, CST. The vehicle was en route to a dumping ground in Mulund.

According to Avhad, this was a protest against garbage being dumped in Mulund as residents of Hari Om Nagar in Thane were affected by it. The protest was led by Jitendra Awhad.

He was booked under the IPC for threatening BMC’s labourers and hijacking the dumper truck, said police sources.

“Avhad has been charged under the IPC and as compared to this, BMC’s penalty is very less.”
