Two Bangladeshi nationals, held by Ishanpur police recently, escaped from Special Operation Group (SOG) custody on Saturday night. The Ishanpur police had detained two Bangladeshi nationals - Irfan Shaikh, 34 and Bilal Shaikh, 23 from Chandola Talav, Shah Alam area on February 14, after they were found living illegally in the city. The Ishanpur police after detaining the duo had handed over their custody to SOG for further interrogation.

According to sources, on Saturday night, Irfan and Bilal escaped from police custody by breaking the window panes of the room on second floor, where they were lodged. This is second incident in a month when Bangladeshi nationals have escaped from police custody. Earlier also, a Bangladeshi national, Mohammed Nazrul Mohammed Murad, had escaped from police custody by breaking the window panes of the room, where he was lodged.

According to SOG sources, the detained Bangladeshis were kept at SOG building, but were under the custody of Ishanpur police. It was also learnt that Irfan was earlier arrested by police in a loot case under Dehgam police station area for rioting at Maninagar.

According to sources, there are more than one thousand Bangladeshi nationals living illegally in different parts of the city. Around three months back, police had arrested 54 Bangladeshis in Ishanpur area.

These Bangladeshis easily sneak into Indian territories via Bengal border by paying money to Bangladesh Rifles, said the sources, adding that an organised gang is involved in this activity along Bangladesh-India border. The Bangladeshis come to India in search of livelihood and are mainly engaged as labourers with construction companies.

The city police have been conducting raids at various slum areas, mostly in Muslim dominated localities after police tightened its noose around these illegal residents. DCP AV Vasava said, "Both the Ishanpur police and SOG personnel were deputed for the security of these Bangladeshi nationals. The accused who had escaped from police custody were not professional criminals or terrorists."
