It was slated perhaps to be one of the biggest art events in the city to rouse interest and babble alike — not because of its content but surely because of the name behind the paintbrush. A limited edition collection of prints of canvas paintings titled the Mughal-e-Azam series was all set for a preview at a city art gallery, followed by an online sale. However, even though most of the arrangements were made including Husain’s family being in the city especially to be a part of the preview, it now stands indefinitely postponed.

A source close to the gallery says, “The Mughal-e-Azam series was painted by Husainsaab two years ago while he was in London and has never been shown in India. While the canvases capture the quintessence of that era, with court scenes, battle scenes, images of Anarkali, there isn’t anything that might seemingly appear as offensive.

“The preview was to be an extreme hush-hush affair with limited invites going out to friends and family of the gallery owners and Husain’s family was also in town to grace the occasion, including his daughters Raeesa and Aqueela.”

The source also says that the master painter is dying to come back to India. “Husainsaab has already apologised to certain sections of the society who have felt offended. He has made a mistake under a passion of the moment. We must all learn to forgive. It is time we stand up against those miscreants who have vested interests in the matter.”

Security matters were definitely on the minds of the gallerists when they were earlier planning the preview and sale of the prints of Husain’s works. The source says, “Though we are trying our best to remain unfazed about the way Husain’s works have been treated throughout the country earlier, security is definitely a concern.” As of now, the preview has been indefinitely postponed.
