Political parties may be eyeing the youth to hit the bull's eye every election, but figures
show that Lok Sabha is getting "older" polls after polls if one goes by the average age of MPs.

The average age of MPs has been increasing since the first Lok Sabha when it was 46.5 years as against 52.63 years in the present Lok Sabha. While the first Lok Sabha had the youngest MPs, the 13th Lok Sabha had the oldest ones with the average of 55.5 years.

The second Lok Sabha was slightly older than the first when the average age of law makers increased to 46.7 years. During the third Lok Sabha which was formed in 1962, the age of MPs increased by three years to 49.4 years.

However, the next Lok Sabha formed in 1967 saw a slight decline in this respect. The average of MPs during this tumultuous political period, which witnessed the split in
Congress and rebellion against Indira Gandhi by Morarji Desai, was 48.7 years.

In 1971, the fifth Lok Sabha which brought back Gandhi once again to power, the MPs grew more old to touch 49.2 years. Interestingly, the sixth Lok Sabha saw the average age of MPs crossing 50 years for the first time when the youth of the country spearheaded an agitation against the declaration of Emergency by Indira Gandhi government.

Gandhi was ousted from power and the first non-Congress government under Desai was formed then. The general elections held three years after the collapse of the Janata government brought back Gandhi once again to power in 1980. That Lok Sabha was younger compared to the previous one with an average age of MPs being 49.9 years.

The eighth Lok Sabha gave India its youngest prime minister in Rajiv Gandhi but the Lower House was not that young. While Rajiv was 40 when he became the prime minster, the average age of MPs was 51.4 years.

The ninth and tenth Lok Sabhas saw the MPs remaining on the 50-plus side, 51.3 and 51.4 years respectively. The average age of MPs in the present Lok Sabha is 52.63
years.
