The Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle returned to his hometown in Radcliffe and celebrated his success with a pint of beer in his social club.

The Slumdog Millionaire filmmaker returned to St Mary's Roman Catholic Social Club in Radcliffe, Lancashire on Sunday, and and celebrated the win with his 88-year-old father Frank and friends, the Daily Mail reported.

The 53-year-old director was mobbed by autograph hunters as he walked down the streets of his native place to enjoy a lunchtime drink at the club.

"It is always great to be back in Radcliffe on home soil. It is where I grew up, where I've spent a third of my life and it's where my family still live. I must admit it's a pretty impressive turn out for a Sunday lunchtime.

"Radcliffe is so important to me. It is possible to get lost in the glamour of Hollywood so it is incredibly important to have your family around you and to come back here.

The director, who has conquered every award ceremony with his Mumbai-based film, said, "I try to make films that people in Radcliffe and places like it will want to go and watch... I always have these people in mind when I start a film. I want to make films which are challenging but also accessible."

Boyle, who now lives in London, has close ties with his extended family, who still live in Radcliffe.
