A father-son duo of doctors in Sabarkantha district of Gujarat was charged with culpable homicide after several hepatitis patients treated by them died.

An FIR was registered late on Saturday night against Govind and Chintan Patel, who run a clinic opposite the primary health centre in Modasa, police said. No arrests have been made so far, they added.

The outbreak of hepatitis-B in Sabarkantha has so far claimed 34 lives, while over 100 patients are undergoing treatment in various hospitals across the district.

“We have filed a complaint against doctors Govind and Chintan Patel. Most of the hepatitis patients in Modasa had taken treatment from the Patels in the last six months,” deputy superintendent of police KK Mysorewala said.

The Patels had been booked under section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), he said.

“When health officials raided the Patel clinic, they found used syringes and undisposed medical waste,” Mysorewala said.

Sabarkantha District Police had earlier arrested six doctors for negligence from Modasa and Dhansura talukas. They were later released on bail as they were charged under the Medical Practitioners Act.

Mysorewala said police had learnt that Chintan, who is reportedly not a qualified doctor, would administer injections to patients.

Meanwhile, four central teams arrived in Sabarkantha on Saturday and began inoculation of staff at public health centres and government-run hospitals.

The government has also decided to undertake mass vaccination in Modasa and nearby villages. Gujarat health minister Jaynarayan Vyas said the government had ordered six lakh hepatitis-B vials for the three-round mass vaccination programme beginning from Modasa.
