The department of photography design of the National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad, has bagged the prestigious UK India Education and Research Initiative (UKIERI) 2008-09 award. The official announcement about the award will be made on March 23 in Delhi.

Project head of the photography design department, Deepak John Mathew said, "After the officials acknowledged me about the award, I communicated my formal acceptance to them."

It was Mathew who initiated the dual certificate programme through an MoU with the University of Creative Arts in UK. Presently, there are around 13 students in the programme of photography design in NID.

The UKIERI award, which aims to improve the educational links between India and the UK, was announced by the then prime minister of Britain Tony Blair during his visit to India in September 2005. It was eventually launched by him in April of the following year and its progress was welcomed by the heads of both the countries.

Expressing his excitement on receiving the award, he said, "While the award is prestigious, the amount of grant that comes along with the award will be very helpful in supporting the functioning of the programme. The money will be used for the exchange programmes of the students and the faculties and for establishing a library and purchasing other materials." The grant, which will be handed over to the institute for various purposes, will have to be utilised over a period of three years. Besides, the photography design department will also have to submit details of the expenses to the UKIERI.

Talking about the success of the first batch of the programme, Mathew said, "The course is being conducted satisfactorily and our students are receiving a good number scholarships and internships."
UKIERI Collaborative Programme Delivery (CPD) funding is available to UK and Indian institutions for facilitating the development and delivery of UK degrees and professional qualifications in India through institutional partnerships.
