A day before she is supposed to appear before Mohali Police, Fiza, alias Anuradha Bali, on Thursday moved the PSHRC here seeking justice against her "runaway" husband Chand Mohammed, alias Chander Mohan.
The Punjab State Human Rights Commission (PSHRC) accepted her plea and fixed February 25 for hearing. In her petition, Fiza also named Mohali SSP J S Aulakh as "co-accused" alleging that despite lodging a criminal complaint against her husband with the SSP, the police had not yet registered any FIR or Daily Diary Report (DDR) as they were working under pressure from her husband's politically powerful family.
In December 2008, the already married 43-year old Mohan, then Haryana deputy chief minister and son of former Haryana chief minister Bhajan Lal, created a stir when he and 37-year old Bali, a former Assistant Advocate General, converted to Islam and announced their wedlock.
However, the marriage soon turned sour when Chand left Fiza's residence on January 28, 2009 following which she tried to commit suicide which she later denied.
In her police complaint filed last Monday, Fiza alleged that her husband had committed fraud as he had changed religion only to have physical relationship with her and accused him of "rape, hurting religious sentiments, cheating, defamation and criminal intimidation."
Amid reports that he has gone abroad, Chand is untraceable since past many days after he left Fiza's residence.
The former AAG also alleged in her complaint filed with the state human rights commission through an NGO Global Human Rights Council, that it was "unfair" to assign any officer below the rank of additional director general of Police (ADGP) to investigate her case.
Aulakh had earlier assigned SP Varinder Pal Singh to do the job.
Fiza also claimed that she was receiving threats from Bhajan Lal's family and so apprehended threat to her life.
Meanwhile, Aulakh has issued notices to Fiza and Chander Mohan to appear before SP Singh on Friday. The SP has been directed to record their statements, verify documents and examine witnesses if any and submit a fact finding report after which necessary action will be taken.
In her police complaint, Fiza submitted that she came into contact with Chand in 2004 when he was elected MLA for the fourth time in Haryana and claimed she was forced to marry him as he had pleaded that he would die if she did not do so.
However, after their marriage, Chand was disowned by his family and sacked from his post as deputy chief minister.
