After successfully evacuating industries from Singur and Nandigram, Trinamool Congress  chief Mamata Banerjee wants a similar land row at Rajarhat in North 24-Parganas district to oppose land acquisition for the National Security Guard (NSG)’s proposed east zone hub.

The state home department recently received a letter from the NSG headquarters in Haryana, saying they had identified Rajarhat as the most suitable place for setting up NSG’s eastern hub.

A two-member NSG team also inspected Panagarh in Burdwan and Kharagpur in West Midnapore but zeroed in on Rajarhat and sought 1,500 acres to set up the hub.

However, Mamata has announced she will hold agitations wherever the state tries to acquire land for any project.

Mamata wants interested parties to directly deal with land owners and buy from them, but she has probably forgotten that in this case the state will have to provide land for the NSG hub free of cost. There is thus no way than going for acquisition under the existing land acquisition act.

The state government is not keen to make a big issue of this land acquisition on the eve of Lok Sabha elections, more so because the quantum of land required is quite high.

State home secretary A Sen wants to downplay the whole thing. “There has bee no progress over the NSG hub so far. If there is anything, we will inform,” he said.

The proposal to set up NSG hubs in different zones of the country was mooted after the 26/11 terror attack in Mumbai. The hubs will enable quick movement of NSG commandos in the event of future attacks.

Chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee had written to home minister P Chidambaram requesting to set up NSG’s eastern hub in Bengal.
