An underage driver on Monday crashed into a woman in Paldi and sped away without stopping to help. Yet the police have not registered a case against the driver — he is municipal secretary KC Rathod’s son.

Sources at the Ellisbridge police station told DNA that political pressure was being exerted to prevent a case from being registered. HM Kundalia, an inspector at the Ellisbridge police station, said, “I was on the night shift the previous day, so I have little information about the incident.” Apparently, the boy was allowed to walk away after a brief visit to the police station.

There have been persistent reports that the police hid the car near the VS hospital.
The boy, driving a beacon-fitted government car, a Maruti Esteem, hit the middle-aged woman near the National Institute of Design. The woman has sustained serious injuries.
As for Rathod, he first denied any knowledge of the accident but later said that his driver had been behind the wheel when the accident took place.

Sources said that a large number of people had assembled at the spot after the accident and the traffic personnel had a harrowing time clearing the gridlock that resulted. An eyewitness said the person who was driving the car was underage and the car was fitted with a beacon.

Sources said that the injured woman had been admitted to the VS hospital for treatment. But when DNA reached the hospital, the woman was nowhere to be found.
The chairman of the AMC’s standing committee, Asit Vora said, “Rathod is saying that his driver was at the wheel. We cannot do anything but inquire further.”
