Vasectomy is safe and it does not affect a man’s virility. It’s a medically proven fact but very few people know that. They are scared of undergoing the surgical contraception. Therefore, on the streets of Kolkata, a unique chariot, bedecked with slogans in praise of vasectomy, is informing people about vasectomy.

The West Bengal government has taken the step to check the flagging interest in the surgery. According to a report, Kolkata is leading in the number of no scalpel vasectomy (NSV) conducted across the state. Around 3,600 men had opted for NSV in 2008 in the city and the figure is said to be rising.

But health workers say the rest of the state is lagging and the best way to raise awareness is through the “vasectomy chariot”.

But how informed or aware are Kolkata’s males on this contentious issue? Or is it the love for lucre that is driving them to undergo the male sterilisation process?

While no state government official could be reached for comments on the issue, a medical officer said on condition of anonymity: “It is mainly the monetary benefits that are more appealing than the willingness to undergo sterilisation. Most men who undergo NSV hail from the middle and lower income groups.”

Those males undergoing NSV are given Rs1,100 in cash and those who encourage them to undertake the procedure are given Rs200 as reward.

The chariot will proclaim the benefits of NSV, the reward amounts as well as the fact that marital life can be resumed in 48 hours.

Himalini Verma, director, Thoughshop Foundation, an organisation that has done extensive work to raise awareness on reproductive health among adolescents, said: “The myths we try to dispel is that vasectomy does not affect a man’s virility. Unless a man knows what happens during the surgery, he will never be convinced. That is why in our country it is mainly the woman who is sent to undergo a tubectomy.”

In a country where even health workers really don’t care whether it’s the man or woman who undergoes a sterilisation procedure, since the ultimate goal is population control any way, the vasectomy rath could perhaps send out a potent social awareness
message too.
