Barely two days after two criminals escaped from police custody, another outlaw managed to escape after hoodwinking the city cops on Saturday. The incident occurred at the Civil hospital in Shahibaug where a Sabarmati jail inmate, Rajbir Gohil, was being taken for treatment. Gohil had complained of toothache.

Gohil, a resident of Vejalpur, was lodged at Sabarmati Central jail for his involvement in a murder and abduction case. Sources said Gohil complained of severe toothache on Saturday morning. He was taken to the hospital's dental ward in a police van with three policemen accompanied him.

While Gohil and cops were returning after treatment, the outlaw gave a push to the policemen holding him and ran toward the hospital entrance. According to witnesses, a youth was waiting for him on a motorcycle near the entrance and Gohil escaped on his bike. Though the incident occurred in the afternoon, the jail officials lodged a complaint at the Shahibaug police station only in the evening. Sources said the police personnel tried their best to nab Gohil before lodging the complaint.

Police have sealed the exit points of the city and intensified patrolling in Shahibaug and Vejalpur areas.

In the August 2006, Gohil was arrested by police for murder and abduction of his friend Dipal. The murder was an outcome of some monetary dispute between them.

This is the third incident in two days when criminals have managed to escape from police custody. Earlier, on Thursday morning a Bangladeshi national, Mohammed Nazrul Mohammed Murad escaped from the Special Operation Group (SOG) building by climbing down from the second floor of the building and an undertrial escaped from a police van while being taken to Vadodara from Junagarh at Tarapur village.

Three police personnel were accompanying Jeetha Bhai Keswala, an accused in a double murder case.
