After American singer Chris Brown's sister, his cousin Phylicia Thompson has also spoken in his defence, insisting that he might have been "provoked".

Brown, 19, might be getting flak for allegedly attacking his lover, pop star Rihanna, 21, and making criminal threats, but his cousin insists he is not a violent person.

Thompson says Brown's upbringing has made him a civilised human being. "Chris was not brought up... to beat on a woman. It had to be something to provoke him for Chris to do it (sic). He wouldn't have done it just to be having fun," Contactmusic quoted her as telling Extra.

"Yes, he's done something wrong, because he put his hands on her [Rihanna], but you don't know what happened. He had to be provoked to do it. Everybody loved Chris... This comes as a surprise to me," Thompson said.

Meanwhile, Oscar-nominated actor Terrence Howard has joined the gang of Chris Brown supporters, as he has retracted his initial comments on him, stating that his initial comments were "insensitive", as he was not aware of the accusations against Brown.

"Chris is a great guy. He'll be all right. And Rihanna knows he loves her. She'll be all right. Just everybody's got to get out of their way," Howard said.

"When they asked me about Chris Brown, I was in no way aware of what he had been accused of. Had I known, I would have never had said something so insensitive," he said.

Chris Brown has been accused of attacking Rihanna, who was left with horrific injuries, including a split lip, bloody nose, and bite marks on her hands.

Meanwhile, the beleaguered Brown is reportedly hiding in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Sources revealed that the singer, who has been charged with making criminal threats, is holed up in a Las Vegas Hard Rock Hotel to keep away from negative publicity.

"They had to kick out any paparazzi that were around and get him tons of security to sneak him in," the Daily Star quoted a source as telling E! News.

Brown, who has become the subject of constant media glare, was freshly pictured leaving a Los Angeles police station and returning to his West Hollywood hotel. Since then he has moved to Las Vegas.

But staff at the hotel are not willing to divulge his location details for security reasons. "We cannot confirm that Chris is staying with us," the hotel's spokesman said. "However, several of his friends are staying on (the) property."
