In view of the increasing incidence of phishing, pharming, skimming and dumpster diving, experts from ICICI Bank spoke to around 25 police officers from the state on how to tackle these aspects of cyber crime, on Thursday.

CID (Crime) and ICICI Bank jointly organised a seminar on ‘Bank frauds: Prevention and investigation’ on Thursday. Technical experts and IPS officers discussed in detail the investigation of cyber crime at the seminar held at the Gujarat Police Academy at Karai, Gandhinagar.

The speakers at the event said that bank fraud was becoming a big business in today’s world. Unlike ordinary theft and robbery, the amounts misappropriated in the former ran into crores of rupees. Banking presented a good opportunity to fraudsters, with an increasing number of incidents being reported under deposit, loan and inter-branch accounting transactions, including remittance.

“Credit card fraud is a new-generation crime and has an international network. It is well organised and there are a variety of tools involved in it,” Pinaq Dudhwala, national risk manager (credit cards), ICICI Bank Ltd, said.

“There are various ways by which money can be extracted from a credit card account through the internet, including phishing, pharming, skimming and dumpster diving,” he said. Due to a lack of awareness, people submit their personal details and credit card information to fraudulent email senders. Sometimes, these fraudsters steal credit card information and use the account number to withdraw month illegally, he said.

“The seminar has been useful to officers as it has provided them with information on cyber crime. This information can be used effectively in investigations,” FM Guard, joint director, Gujarat Police Academy, said.
