Soon, you will not have to wait in a queue for long at road junctions for the signal to turn green. The city is all set to get two-phase traffic system at two places — Nehrunagar and Anjali — under the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC)’s Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) project within a month.

Trials of two-way traffic system may begin within a fortnight, say sources close to the development. Currently, the city has four-phase traffic systems at all road junctions. Commuters have to wait for three signals to go red, each of which takes around 30 seconds, to cross a junction.

In the two-phase signal system, commuters will only have to wait for green signal, which will help cut travelling time for commuters to half.

The two-phase signal is a part of the BRTS project, plan for which is being chalked out by Centre for Environmental Planning and Technology (Cept). Cept has also introduced a new concept of ‘square traffic island’ at Nehru Nagar and Anjali circle.

A square traffic island will help to improve space management on roads, believe civic body officials. “As per the plan, traffic signals will be put at the corners of the crossroads. Commuters who want to turn right can take vehicle in a specially designed passage and wait for the signal to turn green.,” said a source close to the development.

“There will be 20-metre-long waiting passage. According to an estimate, five cars can stand in one lane of the specially designed passage,” the source said.

Apart from the two-phase traffic system, the city will also get Intelligent traffic system in place within a month.

Intelligent traffic system or sensor-based traffic system operates as per the number of vehicles on the road. “Currently, the city has pre-time signals. Now, the city will get actuated signals, which is a smarter traffic signal system.

According to Vehicle detection information (number of vehicles on the traffic slot on a road), the signal will turn green or red,” said a source.

The source added that they are waiting for a timer machine to reach the city. Once the machine arrives within a fortnight, a control room will be set up to monitor the traffic system.
