The Ulfa is facing a serious funds crunch and plans to abduct actor Danny Denzongpa and extort big money for its coffers. The outfit plans to target celebrities, businessmen and wealthy tourists who use the Bengal-Sikkim corridor to ply between West Bengal and Sikkim.

The threat was shared during an exchange of notes between intelligence wings from West Bengal and Sikkim. The biggest headache for the police in these two states is the threat to Danny Denzongpa, who resides in Mumbai but is from Sikkim and owns a popular brewery, Yuksom Breweries of Dansberg Beer fame, there.

Whenever Denzongpa or his family make a trip to Sikkim, they use the West Bengal-Sikkim corridor after landing at Bagdogra airport near Siliguri.

A senior officer of the West Bengal intelligence branch told DNA that their counterpart in Sikkim police recently found some confidential Ulfa documents, which clearly spelt out such abduction and extortions plans, referring specially to Denzongpa’s family members. The documents also threw light on Ulfa leaders asking its men in north Bengal to arrange for vehicles for use in the abduction.

“From the documents it is also clear that the Ulfa has sought the help of underground terrorist forces in Bhutan like the Bhutan Tiger force,” the West Bengal IB official said.

“The Sikkim police officers exchanged notes with us and after a meeting both sides have tightened security on their respective sides. Sashashtra Seema Bal (SSB) contingents deployed in the region have been cautioned,” the state IB official said.
