Retired employees of Indian Airlines on Tuesday staged a protest in the capital, demanding wage arrears, better medical facilities and extension of pension benefits.

The 'All India Airlines Retired Personnel Association' accused the Civil Aviation ministry of depriving them of basic post-retirement benefits and not applying the recommendations of the Centre-appointed Mohan Committee to look into their pay structure.

"The committee recommended that the salary of public sector employees should be revised w.e.f. January 1, 1997. Five public sector undertakings come under the charge of Civil Aviation ministry.

Wages of employees of all others were revised and payments made to serving as well as retired employees except Indian Airlines Ltd employees till date," the press statement by the association said.

"We demand the ministry end this discriminatory approach and pay our arrears with due effect from Jan 1, 1997," the statement said.

Around 1,000 members of the association gathered at Jantar Mantar here and accused civil aviation minister Praful Patel of not providing them with an appointment to present their demands.

The association members also demanded extension of medical facilities to all retired employees.

They alleged that after deductions made from their final settlement dues at the time of retirement, names of many doctors, nursing homes, hospitals were removed from the list meant for them.

"Retired employees are forced to make advance payments prior to hospitalisation, while serving employees are entitled
to avail these facilities on company's account," the statement said.

The association members also demanded that they be paid interest at prevailing market rate against their annuity or else the money be refunded.

"A pension scheme was formulated and certain deductions were made from the employees' salaries to be deposited with LIC. The Annuity was purchased for few retired employees from their contribution. The scheme flopped and a big chunk of retired employees were not extended the benefits of pension," the statement said.
