Gujarat’s quality initiative for infrastructure projects has not only earned itself the centre’s commendation, but also the honour of being projected as a leader by the centre when it has asked other states to follow in the state’s footsteps while overseeing their government-funded projects.

The secretary in the department of industrial policy and promotion, Ajay Shankar, in a letter to the chief secretaries has cited the Gujarat example, stating that other states should also ensure regular inspection of infrastructure projects.

“It may be noted that the Guj government has recently announced a scheme on monitoring of quality outcome from government spending in the state on infra projects, under which it has been prescribed that the inspection of project work shall be carried out only by accredited inspection bodies,” Shankar said, adding that the Quality Council of India (QCI) could help the states in drafting a detailed system for inspection.
