With the announcement of BJP's prime ministerial candidate L K Advani that senior party leader Sushma Swaraj will contest the Lok Sabha polls from Madhya Pradesh, her chances of contesting the polls from Bhopal seat, a saffron party's bastion, have almost become certain.
"Fielding her from Bhopal is almost certain," a senior BJP leader said from Nagpur after attending the party's national council meeting.
Swaraj at present represents Madhya Pradesh in the Upper House of Parliament and her postal address in the official records is 'Daga Niwas', near Bhopal's Rajabhoj Airport.
Since the meeting of the party's State Election Committee few days back it has become clear that Swaraj will contest the Lok Sabha polls from Bhopal, but so far her candidature from the seat was not declared as the sitting member and former Madhya Pradesh chief minister, Kailash Joshi was reluctant to leave the seat for Swaraj, the party sources said.
Swaraj's growing clout in Madhya Pradesh was prominently noticed when she successfully got her close confidant and senior party worker Jitendra Daga declared as the party's candidate from Huzur assembly seat despite opposition from large number of local party workers.
However, she not only defended Daga's nomination from the seat, but also ensured his victory in the polls.
BJP retained the Bhopal Lok Sabha seat since 1989 with former chief secretary of the state Sushil Chandra Varam winning the polls continuously till 1998-99.
Uma Bharti won the Lok Sabha poll in 1998-99 and in the year 2004 former Chief Minister, Kailash Joshi won the elections from here.
