Aditya Sachdev, coach of India's first junior Australian Open winner Yuki Bhambri, feels including the Delhi teenager in the Davis Cup squad will help him make a smooth transition from junior to senior level.
Sachdev, who has been working with Yuki for the last six years, was on Saturday felicitated alongwith his ward by the All India Tennis Association at DLTA Complex here.
"Men's game is different altogether. I think if Yuki gets a chance to be in the Davis Cup squad not as a playing member but as a fifth player, he can learn a lot just by closely watching the likes of Leander Paes, Mahesh Bhupathi and Somdev Devvarman," Sachdev said after the felicitation function.
"I think he can learn a lot if he just stays around these players during the Davis Cup ties and this will help make transition from junior to senior level. And in two-year time he will be ready for the team."
Yuki has proved his mettle at the junior level by winning Australian Open title and by capturing the world number one ranking but Sachdev said to withstand the tough competition in the senior circuit he needs to improve his physique.
"The challenge before us is to add 8-10 kg muscle weight on his upper body. He has succeeded with his lean frame at junior level but on the senior circuit he needs to be stronger. That is the primary aim for us now," he said.
During transition from junior to senior level players generally face a lot of losses and that could be discouraging.
But Sachdev is not perturbed.
"I don't think those losses will hinder his progress. Yuki is a kind of player who learns from his losses. That should not be a problem.
"But it will take about two to three years to see good results from Yuki on the senior circuit," he said.
The Delhi-based coach said he will also take feedback from the coaches of Nick Bollettieri Academy in the United States where Yuki trains at regular intervals.
"We are travelling there (later this month). I have been there earlier also and have discussed many things with the coaches there. They have been quite receptive to my ideas as well.
"I will get input from the team of coaches with whom Yuki trains and that will help us."
Sachdev also said that his felicitation by the AITA "surprised" him.
"It came as a surprise. And I do appreciate that they have acknowledged my work. It's quite heartening," he said.
